Hyperemesis Gravidarum.
What is Hyperemesis Gravidarum?
Hyperemesis Gravidarum (HG) is a condition in which pregnant women experience extreme levels of nausea and vomiting, and unlike regular “morning sickness” which usually ends after the first trimester, often is prolonged and far more severe.
HG can have a significant impact on the woman’s health as well as her emotional and mental health due to the challenging and often relenting nature of this illness.
Studies have shown that up to 50% of women who suffer severe HG will develop depression and/or anxiety through their pregnancy which also puts them at a significantly higher risk of experiencing postpartum anxiety and/or depression. Looking after mental health whilst pregnant is an incredibly important part of managing HG.
