Postpartum Rage.

What is Postpartum Rage?

Postnatal rage is slowly becoming an increasingly talked about experience in which the mother, or father, experiences intense and all-consuming feelings of rage, followed often by guilt and shame. Whilst beginning to be spoken about, postnatal rage still generally fits in the taboo category of motherhood often resulting in women not seeking support and suffering silence.

The experience of postnatal rage may include:

  • difficulty controlling temper

  • physical expression of anger, ie. throwing things

  • Violent urges and thoughts

  • Screaming and swearing more often

Postnatal rage isn’t considered a mental health disorder so it isn’t screened in the same was as anxiety or depression, making in unclear and hard to determine how many new parents are affected by it. The experience of this rage can be a symptom of anxiety, parental overwhelm and postnatal depression so seeking support from professional perinatal experts is encouraged.
